Every object offered by Miro Made This is completely made by hand—thrown and trimmed on the potter's wheel, and carefully glazed and finished, piece by piece. Each bears the mark of its maker in subtle variations of curve, form, and texture, as well as those found within the clay body itself. Please note that no two pieces are exactly alike—more sisters than twins: closely related, not exactly duplicates, but still a family.

Collection comprises the mainstays of MMT—the basic forms of teacups, bowls, plates, and carafes that are offered as a recognizable and cohesive body of high-quality work.

Studies are limited editions of different shapes, forms, clay bodies, and glazes that provide Miro with the opportunity to experiment within her chosen medium and expand her practice.

Seconds consists of pieces that have small flaws such as color variations, marks, or inconsistent glazing that renders pieces not suitable for the collection, but nevertheless, still of value. In fact, some favor the greater variations of seconds—depending on a personal preference for uniqueness.

Interior glaze in creamy vanilla bean, satin

The interior glaze and application of that glaze, is a new one with which I’ve been experimenting. I have a limited amount of scraps of clay that I used to make my speckled ash brown pieces with. (The manufacturer closed up shop in 2019). When I would glaze the interiors with a white glaze, it would result in a lovely speckled interior surface. So now I’m using those precious clay scraps to make a slip with which I paint the interior of these porcelain pieces. Then I bisque fire the pieces like normal, and then glaze with my white satin glaze. The manganese specks bleed through the glaze, creating the creamy white interior glaze, flecked like vanilla bean ice cream. It’s subtle, but lovely. And I’m still playing with the density of the application, so each piece is a little different, in terms of how speckly it is.

I’ve been thinking of the finish as a “speckly lusterware”. Usually in ceramics, luster refers to a glaze / paint that has a suspension of metal (often gold) that is fired onto the surface of pieces. Probably the most common example would be gold or silver rimmed plates. But my finite supply of these scraps of speckled clay are as precious to me as anything gold or silver!
